Our Mixed Potted Gooseberry Collection is ideal for gardeners looking to grow reliable, heavy-cropping gooseberries with excellent flavour. All plants are supplied potted, meaning they are already established with strong, healthy root systems, giving them a higher success rate and quicker establishment than bare-root plants.

Gooseberries are a classic garden fruit, valued for their versatility in desserts, preserves, and fresh eating. This carefully selected collection includes 4 popular gooseberry varieties, chosen from some of Direct Plants’ favourites for flavour, productivity, and garden performance.

Supplied in generous 2–3 litre pots, these plants are ready to plant straight away into borders, fruit cages, or large containers.

• Pax – Nearly Thornless
  A modern variety producing medium to large red berries with a sweet, mild flavour. Fruits in early to mid-summer and is well known for its high resistance to mildew and easy harvesting.
• Hinnonmäki Green
  A traditional variety producing green berries with a sharp, classic gooseberry flavour. Fruits in mid-summer and is excellent for cooking, bottling, and preserves.
• Hinnonmäki Red
  Produces attractive red berries with a sweet-tart flavour. Fruits in mid-summer and is valued for its reliable cropping and good disease resistance.
• Tatjana
  A vigorous variety producing large red berries with a pleasantly sweet flavour. Fruits in mid to late summer and is well suited to both fresh eating and culinary use.

Planting & Care

Gooseberry plants prefer a sunny or partially shaded position in well-drained, fertile soil. They are well suited to planting in the ground, raised beds, or large containers and benefit from good air circulation.

Water well after planting and regularly during dry periods, particularly during the first growing season and while fruiting. Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in spring to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.

Pruning should be carried out in winter while plants are dormant to maintain an open shape, encourage good airflow, and improve fruit size. Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches.
