And, for a little bit of fun, we’ve come up with our top five list. So, here goes:
Our 5 best bare root fruit trees to plant for spring
Victoria Plum
No apologies for starting with what is probably the nation’s favourite fruit tree. The Victoria Plum is just… so English. Every garden and allotment should have at least one.
As a plant the Victoria is very hardy and ideally suited to UK growing conditions. You can even grow it on the patio or deck if you don’t have much space. The tree will produce masses of blossom in the spring and loads of fruit from late summer onwards.
The plums can be eaten straight from the tree or can be used in all sorts of cooking and makes superb jams and preserves.
Bramley apple fruit tree
No list of the best bare root fruit trees would be complete without the bramley. It’s the classic English cooking apple and there can’t be many of us who don’t delight in a traditional bramley apple pie.
Fully hardy and very easy to grow even the most novice of gardeners will be able to cultivate a great crop of cooking apples. The fruit will be ready to pick from late summer or early autumn.
Blue tit plum
Another plum tree and another British classic. The blue tit plum produces really sweet tasting fruit.
The good news is that this tree is self-fertile so it is very easy to grow. It can be positioned in full sun or semi-shade so you should be able to find a suitable spot for it.
The blue tit plum can grow up to around 12 feet tall but can be grown in a container or pot and pruned to size.
Stella cherry tree
A personal favourite. The stella cherry produces lovely spring blossom and lush green foliage. In the summer the fruit is large and very, very sweet. You can eat the cherries straight from the tree or they make wonderful jam.
As it’s self-fertile stella is very easy to grow and is fully hardy. Perfect for the British climate.
In the garden the tree can grow up to around 13 feet. If you’re struggling for space the tree will grow well in a container on the patio. Judicious pruning will keep it to a manageable height.
Dwarf Katy apple
Last, but certainly not least, on our list of the best bare root fruit trees to plant for spring is the dwarf Katy apple tree. This is a wonderful tree that will grace any garden.
In the spring it will show lovely white blooms. But, of course, the main event happens in the late summer. The tree bears deep red and very glossy apples. The Katy produces dessert apples which are perfect for cooking. It’s a reliable plant and you will always enjoy a bumper crop.
Being on dwarf stock it’s a perfect tree for the patio. However, do be aware that you will need another apple tree close by for pollination. You can read more about this on our ask the expert pages.
