Best dwarf pear trees for small gardens

22nd Mar 2021

Everyone loves a pear. It's such a juicy fruit and so versatile. It can of course be eaten raw and is delicious when done so. But it can also be used in cooking (poached pear anyone?), makes a lovely juice and more than a few of us have turned out a very decent homemade pear wine. They can also be added to protein shakes and there are countless amazing desserts you can create. And personally, I’m also rather partial to a nice pear jam.

In short, you'll never run out of things to make or drink if you have pear trees in the garden or your mini-orchard.

Pear trees aren't as popular as apple or plum trees but they aren't that far behind. We've found that conference and William pear trees are the most popular varieties with our customers. But there are other more exotic pear trees which anyone can grow in their own garden.

Must read article: How to plant a border

Typically, when thinking about fruit trees gardeners imagine they need loads of space. After all pear trees can grow to a height of over 15 feet. But, if you have a small garden or even just a patio or balcony, there are pear trees grown on dwarf stock which are perfect for you.

These wonderful trees can be grown in the border or in pots and containers. Grown on high-fruiting dwarf stems these trees typically produce a good crop every year. Easy to grow without needing a huge amount of maintenance dwarf pear trees will produce great results for most gardeners.

We supply our dwarf pears in five litre pots and the trees will arrive at your door already established and ready to plant. We always have a nice selection of fruit trees for you to choose from. We’ve picked a few for you to look at below.

Pyrus conference pear

Conference is the pear we all recognise from the supermarket. It’s a lovely pear and one of the staples of fruit bowls in many households. When they are ready to eat, they are so sweet and juicy.

This particular variety is self-fertile which makes it great for inexperienced gardeners or those who just want a good crop of fruit without the fuss. These trees can grow to around eight feet tall but of course can be pruned to keep them smaller and more manageable to grow in pots.

Louise Bonne pear

This is a nice variety. Louise Bonne is a very sweet dessert pear. The tree itself is stunning and will look wonderful on your patio or decking. It can even be trained up a wall or fence. It will only grow to around four feet tall so it’s a perfect tree for gardeners with limited space.

In mid to late spring the tree will bloom with white almost pink flowers before the fruit is ready to harvest in the autumn. The pears are large and you should get a nice crop every year.

Pyrus William pear

Another classic pear and one that rivals conference as the most popular variety in the UK. William is of course a very sweet fruit and there’s nothing like eating one of these pears when you’ve just plucked it from your own tree.

This is a wonderful tree for the small garden. It will grow to around five feet and have a spread of around three feet. But, even though it’s a small tree, you’ll get plenty of fruit from it.

They are just three of the dwarf pear trees we have in stock and ready to ship to you right now. Remember for those trees which aren’t self-fertile you will need one or two companion trees for it to produce fruit.
