How much does a polytunnel cost?
1st Mar 2020
When thinking about the cost of a polytunnel there’s a very simple and obvious rule; the larger the tunnel the higher the cost. Having said that let’s get straight to the heart of the matter. You can purchase a high-quality commercial grade polytunnel for under £400. A 10x12’ unit provides incredible value for money. Especially when compared to a similar sized greenhouse. And that size of polytunnel is ideal for gardens, allotments and small holdings. Of course, a polytunnel can be supplied as large as 18x90’ for commercial growers. Yet even that massive structure will only cost around £1,500.
Sizes of polytunnels
We’ve already mentioned tunnel sizes at each end of the scale. But what are the other options you have? Polytunnels can be purchased in various widths and lengths. The most common widths are 10, 14 and 18 feet. Lengths can be anything from 12 to 90 feet. Obviously, as we mentioned above, the larger the tunnel the more it will cost. But when you compare polytunnels to greenhouses the difference in cost and value for money is staggering.
What does a small polytunnel cost?
It’s surprising how low prices start for a ‘small’ polytunnel. Though when we say small, we’re still talking about 10x12 feet. That’s a large growing area ideal for the keen home gardener or allotment holder. And you can currently find that tunnel available for less than £400 which is unbeatable value for money.
Commercial polytunnels
Professional horticulturists and commercial growers obviously require larger structures than most home gardeners. Most nurseries will have a variety of different sized tunnels but the biggest can be up to 90 feet long. For commercial growers polytunnels present a far more cost-effective solution than investing in similar sized greenhouses.
Why cheap polytunnels are a false economy
We’ve mentioned some prices in this post. But we can’t deny you can find even cheaper polytunnels. Unfortunately for bargain hunters those tunnels are inevitably inferior imports which are produced from poor quality materials and aren’t manufactured to the same high standards as those made in the UK. Buying cheap polytunnels is definitely a false economy. And that apparent bargain may well end up costing you plenty in the long run.
