Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ Flowering Cherry Tree
Bare Root | 5–6ft Tall | By Direct Plants
Graceful yet richly coloured, Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ is supplied as a premium bare root flowering cherry tree at 5–6ft tall by Direct Plants. Grown and carefully selected at our award-winning family nursery in Norfolk, this striking ornamental variety is admired for its deep foliage colour and refined spring display.
Famed for its contrast of soft spring blossom and dark burgundy foliage, ‘Royal Burgundy’ brings depth and drama to the garden each season. Its upright habit and gently arching branches make it particularly well suited to feature planting, avenues, and contemporary garden designs where colour, structure, and elegance are paramount.
Flowering Cherry Tree
(Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ – Ornamental, approx. 20–25ft / 6–7.5m at maturity)
In early to mid-spring, ‘Royal Burgundy’ is covered in clusters of single pale pink flowers that appear along the branches, set against emerging deep purple foliage. Fresh foliage quickly deepens to a rich wine-red through summer, before turning vibrant shades of crimson and orange in autumn. The tree develops a neat, upright structure that matures into a lightly spreading crown, offering year-round interest without overpowering the space.
Fully hardy and adaptable, this variety thrives in most soil types and prefers a sunny position to achieve its best foliage colour. It performs best when planted directly into the ground, where it can develop its natural shape and ornamental impact to full effect.

Planting & Care Guide (Bare Root Trees)
Our bare root trees are root-wrapped in moist compost, ensuring they arrive in excellent condition and do not require immediate planting. This gives you flexibility while maintaining nursery-fresh quality.
• Soak roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting
• Dig a hole wide enough to allow the roots to spread naturally
• Position the tree so the root flare sits at soil level
• Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly
• Stake during establishment, especially in exposed locations
• Mulch around the base (keeping clear of the trunk) to retain moisture
• Water regularly throughout the first growing season
Once established, Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ is low-maintenance and highly rewarding, delivering rich foliage colour and a beautiful spring blossom display year after year.
Whether planted as a feature tree, part of an avenue, or within a mixed ornamental scheme, the Royal Burgundy Flowering Cherry Tree is a refined, high-quality choice — grown with care and delivered direct from our nursery to your garden.
