Choose a sunny or partially shaded, sheltered position with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Magnolias prefer neutral to acidic conditions and benefit from a position protected from strong, cold winds.
Prepare a generous planting hole and position the root ball at approximately the same depth as it has been growing in the pot. Firm gently and water thoroughly after planting.
Keep regularly watered during the first growing season while the roots establish. Applying an organic mulch around the base will help retain moisture and improve growing conditions.
Magnolias generally require very little pruning. If necessary, remove damaged or unwanted growth after flowering.
