Our Hornbeam hedging plants are an excellent choice for creating strong, attractive boundaries with plenty of seasonal interest. Carpinus betulus produces fresh green foliage through spring and summer, followed by warm brown leaves that can remain on clipped hedges into winter. Hardy and versatile, Hornbeam is particularly useful for garden boundaries, screening and more natural planting schemes.
Hornbeam is a reliable hedging plant that responds well to regular trimming, making it suitable for both neatly maintained garden hedges and more informal boundaries. Its dense branching provides useful screening, while the retained brown foliage of established clipped hedges can continue to offer some cover through the winter months.
It is also a particularly useful alternative to Beech where ground conditions are heavier or wetter, as Hornbeam performs well on soils that may be less suitable for Beech. Its foliage and seeds can also provide shelter and food for birds, insects and small mammals, making it a valuable choice for wildlife-friendly planting.
