Hornbeam, Carpinus betulus, is a superb traditional hedging tree, supplied as an impressive XL approximately 6ft tall established tree in a substantial 5/7.5 litre pot. These large, well-established plants are ideal for instant hedging, providing immediate height, structure and considerably faster results than starting with smaller young hedging plants.
Hornbeam produces attractive fresh green foliage through spring and summer, developing beautiful yellow, golden and warm brown autumn shades as the season changes. When regularly clipped as a hedge, it can retain some of its dry brown foliage into winter, helping to provide additional seasonal screening before fresh new leaves emerge in spring.
At approximately 6ft tall when supplied, these substantial trees are ideal for creating tall boundaries, privacy screens, formal hedges and mature-looking garden divisions. Hornbeam is particularly useful for more challenging locations and is generally tolerant of heavier soils. Plant at approximately 1–2 trees per metre, depending on the density and speed of coverage required.

Please note: Hornbeam is deciduous, although established clipped hedges can retain a proportion of their dried brown foliage through winter. Plants purchased during the dormant season may arrive with brown foliage, reduced foliage or completely bare depending on seasonal conditions.
