Fast Growing Shrubs for the Garden

Fast Growing Shrubs for the Garden

26th Apr 2023

I can’t imagine anyone would disagree when I say shrubs are an ever-popular part of most gardens. And why wouldn’t they be?

They provide structure, colour, and texture to any outdoor space whether they are planted in the ground or in attractive containers. And, not only do they help create a sense of depth and dimension to your planting scheme but can also offer privacy and screening.

No wonder then that when thinking about new plants for the garden our thoughts will often turn to shrubs. And, with most of us being impatient by nature - I know that’s a sweeping generalisation but let’s face it we’re in a want it now culture - we naturally want our shrubs to grow as fast as possible.

Why we love fast growing shrubs

We want to see that wonderful splash of colour as quickly as possible. But fast-growing shrubs can swiftly fill empty spaces while providing an instant (in gardening terms) sense of interest. These plants are perfect when you’re looking to establish a new garden or revamp an existing one.

We’ll discuss more reasons why fast-growing shrubs are so popular and touch on how to look after them but let’s start by looking at some of our favourite plants. All of which are available in the shrubs section of our website.

Things to think about when choosing fast-growing shrubs

Hardiness

As a gardener you’ll be well used to the vagaries of the UK climate. Naturally enough you need to make sure any fast-growing shrubs you choose to plant will thrive in the British weather. But you’ll have no worries if you pick from the selection on our website as all our shrubs are fully UK hardy.

Soil type and drainage

Different shrubs prefer different kinds of soil. Some will only do well in well-drained soil, while others can tolerate heavier conditions. If you can, test your soil and choose your shrubs to suit.

Light and water

Most plants thrive in full sun though some will prosper in partial shade. Check which conditions your shrubs prefer and position them accordingly. If you’re planting into containers you can always reposition them to get the best conditions.

Maintenance and pruning

Fast-growing shrubs will need regular pruning to keep their shape and promote new and healthy growth. Others however will only need minimal maintenance. If you’re anything like me you’ll choose low maintenance plants.

Wildlife and pests

We all want pollinators and birds in our gardens and certain shrubs will attract them. Something to consider when you’re planning your planting scheme. But also think about potential pest issues and opt for plants with natural pest resistance.

Fast-growing shrubs and your garden design

Privacy and screening

Fast-growing shrubs can be strategically placed to create privacy, screen unsightly views, or even serve as windbreaks. Naturally enough if you’re using the plants for screening you need to choose those with dense foliage.

Adding colour and texture

Look for plants with attractive foliage and vibrantly coloured blooms to add interest and texture to your garden and create a beautiful space.

Using shrubs as focal points

Select statement shrubs with striking flowers, unusual foliage, or an unusual architectural form and they will be a wonderful focal point in your garden.

Plant shrubs into mixed borders

Combine your fast-growing shrubs with perennials, grasses, and evergreens to create a mixed border which will provide you with colour and interest all year long.

Think about the wildlife

Your shrubs will provide shelter, food, and nesting sites for wildlife including birds which will be a real treat when you look out the window and see robins, blue tits, and others in your garden.

Plant in the ground or in a container?

With most shrubs you have the option of planting them directly in the ground or in containers. Container gardening is a great way to brighten up any space including patios and balconies.
