Product Description

Copper Beech, Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’, is the true purple-leaved form of Beech and one of the finest choices for creating a distinctive traditional hedge. Supplied as an impressive XL approximately 6ft tall established tree in a substantial 5/7.5 litre pot, these large plants are ideal for instant hedging, providing immediate height, colour and structure.

Unlike ordinary Green Beech, true ‘Purpurea’ produces naturally rich purple, burgundy and deep copper-toned foliage during the growing season. As autumn arrives, the foliage develops warmer copper and bronze shades, with clipped hedges often retaining much of their dry foliage through winter for additional seasonal screening.

At approximately 6ft tall when supplied, these substantial established trees are ideal for creating tall boundaries, privacy screens, formal hedges and impressive garden divisions. Plant at approximately 1–2 trees per metre, depending on the density and speed of coverage required.

Plant Features:

  • True Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’ Copper Beech

  • Supplied as an impressive XL approximately 6ft tall established tree

  • Established in substantial 5/7.5 litre pots

  • Excellent for instant hedging and immediate height

  • Recommended planting density of approximately 1–2 trees per metre

  • Naturally rich purple, burgundy and copper-toned foliage

  • Beautiful bronze and copper autumn colour

  • Often retains dry copper foliage through winter when regularly clipped

  • Excellent for privacy, boundaries and screening

  • Responds extremely well to clipping and shaping

  • Ideal for formal, traditional and countryside-style hedging

  • Hardy, reliable and long-lived

Please note: Copper Beech is deciduous, although established clipped hedges commonly retain a proportion of their dry copper-brown foliage through winter. Plants purchased during the dormant season may therefore arrive with brown foliage, reduced foliage or completely bare. Purple foliage colour can also vary in intensity according to the season, light levels and growing conditions. Height, branching, shape and fullness will naturally vary between individual trees. Plants are carefully selected before dispatch to provide strong, established XL true ‘Purpurea’ Copper Beech trees ready to create immediate height and impact.
